Common questions

How much should I tip?

US convention: 15% for adequate service, 18–20% standard, 25% for exceptional. Counter service and takeout are discretionary (10% or a couple dollars is generous). The presets above cover all of these.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette says pre-tax; in practice most people tip on the total because it's the number staring at them. The difference is small — on a $100 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% post-tax adds $1.60.

How does splitting work?

The total (bill + tip) divides evenly by the number of people. For uneven splits — someone had the lobster — split the bill portion by consumption and the tip evenly; that's beyond any calculator's pay grade.
