Common questions

What are HTML entities?

Escape codes for characters that have special meaning in HTML: < for <, & for &, " for ". Without them, the browser would interpret your < as the start of a tag.

When do I need to encode?

Whenever literal text goes into HTML: code examples on a page, user-generated content, attribute values. Encoding the five critical characters (& < > " ') is also a basic defense against HTML injection.

What does "encode non-ASCII" do?

Converts accented letters, symbols, and emoji to numeric entities (é → é) — useful for systems stuck with ASCII-only encoding. Modern UTF-8 pages don't need it.

What can the decoder handle?

Named entities (&, —, ©…), decimal (©), and hex (™) forms — pasted from page source, feeds, or database exports.
